Maintaining The Quality Of African Fabric

Tips on maintaining the quality of African fabric, what you should do and what you should not do.

1. Don’t machine wash your ankara

Your African print fabric can best be washed by hand than by machine. If you grew up washing your clothes by hand, this shouldn’t be too difficult.  Washing by hand means you have control of how you manipulate the fabric during the wash and are more careful with your fabric.

2. Do wash your fabric in rice water

Rice water contains starch and nutrients that are good for the health of your ankara. Rice water will keep your fabric shiny and thick. The hue of the fabric will be preserved and your fabric will look brand new for years.

3. Don’t dry your fabric in direct sunlight

Always avoid drying your fabric in direct sunlight. Too much sunlight over an extended period of time can cause damage to your ankara.

4. Do Iron your ankara inside out. Many of us do this with our regular clothes, so do continue ladies.

5. Do make use of the dry cleaners

If you are not big on doing laundy or following speacial washing instructions, rather take your ankara outfit to the dry cleaners and call it a day.
